To find out what I think is the number one blogging tip you’ll have to keep reading.

I’ve done it you’ve done it we all do it.  Shameless self- promotion. “Hey come to my community, like my FacebookMake My Morning Blog Hop 3/12. Lately all this self pumping promoting had me thinking. Like the cute yellow dude in the picture. How is it possible to stand out  and be noticed in a a sea of self promoters?  Ah ha ! This skit by Brian Regan reminds me of bloggers ( sometimes myself included).

If you’ve never seen the whole skit it’s hilarious. It’s all about how one person dominates the conversation and only wants to talk about themselves.
So what is the number one bloggingHow To Make Money Blogging. Read more … » tip for bloggersBloggers Get Organized With See It Bigger Planner. Read more … »? Don’t just Toot and Dump.  If you’ve never heard that phrase it’s because I just made it up. I like to do that sometimes.  Don’t just hop on a person’s blogWomen Entrepreneurs And Bloggers You Are Wired For Greatness. Read more … » or their Facebook or anything else and say “Toot toot follow me, I’m cool, don’t you want to see what I did?” then leave their site and not even know what they wrote in their article. After all if you just dumped your toot in their comment section you want to make sure it relates to their post.
It happens to me tons. I’m not upset though I just smile and think. “OK I’ll come visit you” But some bloggers really can’t stand that.
I have a girlfriend as some of you know I’ve been a singer for years. We’d meet up on the road on some gigs after not seeing her for a year or so and she’d say ” Girl I’m so happy to see you what’s been going on?”
After my second sentence she’d jump in and the rest of the night was like that video all about her.

I can tell you when they do it makes me feel awesome.  If you’re reading this you probably know who you are and I love you guys!  If I do a blog hop then people who want to follow my blog should really want to follow. My number one tip and I’ll end it with this because I’m suppose to be working on a few guest posts that are due ( see how self promotion just creeps in ) eek gads!  My number one tip is try to make the blogger you follow and those who follow you  feel appreciated.  Try to re-tweet your friends things.  I ask in my newsletter all the time if I can help and what I can do.  And I am happy to share what I have learned.
Don’t be like that old 70′s song “Bad Girls” and be a “Bad Girl Blogger” who says “Toot Toot yea Beep Beep” And Toot and dump all over the place.  For those who are too young to remember this song ( God help me) They said Toot Toot at the beginning of it.

  1. Lady, you are absolutely right. I'm one of "those" bloggers that cannot STAND when someone leaves a comment that is completely irrelevant to the post that just asks for a return visit. It's rude and makes me NOT want to visit that site just out of spite.

Here's the perfect example – I wrote a VERY heartfelt post about the abandonment I was feeling by my father and how heartbroken I was. I got 12 very supportive and helpful comments. Then this one:

"fun fun fun fun blog! Im so happy i found you! proud follower now! come follow me back! thanks!

    http://www.SELFISHPERSON.com"

    I mean, really!?

I have found that the best way to get readers to visit and engage in conversation is to visit and engage in conversation elsewhere. Leaving relevant and heartfelt comments are a sure way to get someone curious about who you are and what you do. Much better than "HEY I'M COOL, COME LIKE ME!"

  2. Lindsay your one of those that I follow and visa versa that I love :) I'm sure you knew I was talking about you and a few others ;) BTW come follow me everywhere! Just kidding

  3. Good post, Lisa! I asked the question on Blogfrog not so long ago about whether people ever actual read the blogs they follow. I want readers, not just numbers. I'm a writer, not just a blogger and I want my words and work to mean something to someone. I haven't always succeeded at this, but I try now to only follow blogs I'm truly interested in reading or following. And I try very hard to leave a comment that is meaningful and relevant. And on my blog, show me you've read something! Related to my post! Now I'm all riled up. Good post! Now, come follow me too! ;)

  4. I love this post. I love blogging & the blogging community. I'm not the biggest fan of non-personal comments. I write because I like to express myself! If you choose to follow me I HOPE it is because you like what I have to say, not because you want a fake follow.

  5. I haven`t had people leave comments of nothing to do with my posts but have seen it on others Blogs. This would irritate me for sure. I am now following your blog and loved this post, timely as I am looking for direction on furthering my blog. Thanks, and feel free to check out my Blog and follow back if you would like…

  6. Hello!
    Love love love this post!
I actually really hope my new followers interact with me on my blog and visa versa..otherwise one tends to feel like they're writing to air…nothing makes me more happy then a comment on my posts from someone who's actually read them :) MUCH better then followers!

Im so glad I've found this blog! Im a mompreneur myself. Im a single mom who works from home so I can be with my son. Im continuously thinking of new ideas..I can't seem to stop myself :P
I look forward to reading your blog and learning from you!

  8. Hi Lisa,
I just followed your link here from our Bloggers Helping Bloggers group on LinkedIn. As soon as I read your title "…Get Noticed In A Sea Of Self Promoters", I knew I was in for a good read.

You've summed up well a blogging phenomenon where bloggers hop from one blog to another without ever forming solid relationships. Actually, this behavior is similar to what happens at many real life networking events.

Hang in there, because you're on the right track. There are lots of us who are determined to form real communities around our blogs and we're supportive. It looks like you've already started finding some.

  9. Sherryl thank you for stopping by. Yes I have been very fortunate I have some wonderful mom bloggers who support me and I do the same with them. No one wants numbers we all want friends even if they are via the internet :)

  10. Yup!!! You said it all!

The main reason I blog? It's to make friends. I love big numbers (and Lord knows comments make me geek out) but I don't want people to follow me superficially. I'm trying to build relationships!

  11. You guys are all so right :) I'm also super happy to meet you and I'm excited you've decided to follow my blog – Thank you you are very appreciated. I'm going to check yours out in the morning Matilda is fighting a cold and I'm a worn out mama LOL

  12. Some great comments with everyone and it's nice to know I'm not alone. I got in to blogging to make connections for the purpose of getting to know other bloggers, learning to and from each other and to try and support each other. I love writing so I'm always thrilled when people leave a comment. I don't get annoyed if it's not related to the post but I definitely am thrilled when it does relate to it. I've commented and done short posts encouraging interaction and inspiring each other. Unfortunately those ones didn't get the comments lol. I'm sure happy to see the interaction happening here :) not surprised that you wrote such a great and thought provoking post Lisa. Loved it.

  13. Kacie

Truth! It drives me nuts when people leave comments that obviously have nothing to do with the post. I'm thankful for the readers I have that take the time to leave relative comments.

I found your blog on the New Year, New Followers follow fest and look forward to seeing more from you!

  16. Love your post! Looking forward to reading more about your blogging tips in 2012! I could really use some advice!! So glad I found your blog via the New Year Hop…I'm a new follower on GFC!

P.S. – I'm a bulldog owner too! Ours is 9 and not quite the bully she use to be…though she still does like to eat the kid's toys when we're not looking!

  17. I'm a new follower from the New Years Blog Hop! I'm horrible about not commenting on people's blogs, even though I'm a faithful reader so I'm trying to get better about that. I really dislike it when people leave the generic comments to! I'm excited to start reading your blog.

  18. I'm a new follower from the New Years Blog Hop. I have to say that I truly agree with what you have to say. It's frustrating to have someone comment and it just say "new follower" but has nothing to do with the post. While I appreciate having new followers, I get more excited about the idea of someone comment specifically on that post.

Long story short, your blogger advice should be posted everywhere for everyone to see!

  19. Thanks so much for sharing these words of wisdom at the Blog Tips Cafe over at my place, Lisa. Appreciation does go a long way! If we’re truly looking for engaging our community, making for a 2-way conversation is a goal as much as possible. I definitely am striving to show appreciation for those who link up by promoting them on my blog, Facebook, pinterest, etc. and to comment as much as I can. With a more-than-full-time job, this is challenging, but I really am looking for a more meaningful engagement than the toot-and-dump (lol!).

  20. Hi Lisa, Thank you for dropping by my blog recently & for leaving a sweet comment. I enjoyed this article. It has some interesting points. Thanks for sharing the information.

    Warmly, Michelle

  21. Hi Lisa.

“love this post”… but actually, I think I just love your authentic writing style.

Re: toot and dumps – yeah, I try and respond to everyone that comments on my work. But when it’s just a “Nice post. I should definitely do this!”… I always hesitate a little.

    Michael

  22. Lisa, I enjoyed this post. I am relatively new to blogging and have SO MUCH to learn. I found your blog when signing up for the Linky Followers. I haven’t had any of those off the wall posts to my blog but I have seen them on other blogs. I read one similar to what Lindsey mentioned happened to her. The blog owner’s sister had passed away and everyone was leaving heartfelt notes of condolence. Someone popped in with a happy little, “Love your blog!!! Please join mine!” Ouch!
I am not a young mom. My daughter is grown, married and made me an estatic grandmom! So, your parenting tips I will ignore because I will no doubt think I know better than you, but everything else I will try to soak up like a drunk in a wine vat! So, I have to get back to reading your tips now. Catch you later…
    Ann

    • Ann I love your honesty ” So, your parenting tips I will ignore because I will no doubt think I know better than you,” LOL my tips are more like stories of what I”ve been through :)

I’m glad I hope you enjoy the site there are a ton of things on here and my book will be out soon so look for that as well I know it will help tremendously :)

  23. I enjoyed the reality of what you shared and as a newbie I’ll make sure that I don’t do this. In addition to what you shared, I think that really having a passion for what we write about on our blogs may tone down this type of behavior and really help us to get into the people.

    • Thanks Aimee sometimes it’s just human nature to care about ourselves but then we have to think,”how would I like them to treat me?” Then do that. Thanks for your comment.

  24. cassandra

I know exactly what you mean! I have a youtube channel and I HATE when other girls send me messages or write on my feed saying “OMG I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! COME CHECK OUT MINE!”. It’s funny so many people “LOVE” my channel and yet my subscriber list doesn’t seem to go up. It drives me up the wall. Honestly I check all my subscribers channels to see if they’re someone I’d be interested in following so if they’d done that simple task I would have checked out their channel anyways. Great post!

    • Hey Cassandra :) Thanks and welcome to my space .

  25. Hi Lisa,

Boy, do I feel like you reposted this for me to read today (LOL—see its all me these days…uggghhh….LOL). I’ve been buried in my own work developing great things to help others out and it’s been in the back of my head bugging me that I really should be out connecting with my readers and I have been putting it off. Thanks for reminding me that there needs to be a healthy balance to all of this and what good is a great service I am putting together if I have no readers to enjoy it. They are the most important.

Thanks Lisa. I appreciate all you do. = )
